Congratulations to them on winning the Under-19 World Cup. This triumph makes every Indian extremely proud.— Narendra Modi (@narendramodi) February 3, 2018Chasing 217 to win, India were off to a flyer with Prithvi Shaw and Manjot Kalra doing what they have been doing throughout the tournament. However, India’s chase was halted by rain after just four overs. India reached 23/0 with the openers Shaw on 10 and Manjot batting on 9 when the umpires decided to call the covers in.But after the delay, the duo made sure there were no hiccups and showed great intent to bring their fourth fifty-run stand in the tournament. They continued the onslaught until Will Sutherland removed Shaw for 29 with India at 71/1 from 11.3 overs. In came the in-form Shubman Gill and forged a good partnership with the attacking Manjot and took India past the three-figure mark in the 16th over. The Delhi boy continued his attacking game and completed his fifty off 47 balls — his second half-century of the tournament. The duo brought their 50 partnership up off 47 balls in the 20th over and took India towards the target as Australia looked helpless and desperate for a wicket. But just when it was looking that India are running away with it, Param Uppal struck and removed the dangerous Gill for a 30-ball 31, leaving India at 131/2 from 21.2 overs. However, Manjot steadied the ship along with wicketkeeper batsman Harvik Desai and kept India on top of the game throughout with India reaching the 150-run mark in the 27th over. After a brief spell, where he kept quiet, Manjot again started to get on top of the bowlers — starting with a towering six of the bowling off Lloyd Pope in the 29th over.Desai supported Manjot perfectly as India built another 50-run stand before the southpaw finally completed his century in the 39th over of the bowling off Sutherland to take India closer to victory after India’s 200 came up in the 36th over with a boundary from Desai.advertisementDesai, who was dropped on 40 by Uppal, finally finished the game off with a boundary in the 39th over to give India the victory. This was also the first time Rahul Dravid lifted a World Cup.Kalra remained unbeaten on 101 while Desai finished with 47 not out.Earlier, India rode on a disciplined bowling effort to restrict Australia to a meagre 216.Jonathan Merlo top-scored for the Australians with a steady 102-ball 76, laced with six boundaries even as the Indian bowlers complemented each other well to bundle out the opposition in 47.2 overs. For the Boys-in-Blue, Ishan Porel, Kamlesh Nagarkoti, Shiva Singh and Anukul Roy took two wickets each while Shivam Mavi grabbed one.Well done India under 19s! That the triumph came overseas makes it even more special. #ICCU19WorldCup— Sanjay Manjrekar (@sanjaymanjrekar) February 3, 2018Champions! Team goal more important than first T20 ton: Dhawan

first_imgKolkata, April 13 (IANS) He may have missed out on his maiden T20 century by three runs, but the sportsman that he is Shikhar Dhawan was all smiles when Colin Ingram hit a six to take Delhi Capitals home against Kolkata Knight Riders at the Eden Gardens. While team advisor Sourav Ganguly called him a class act, the opener said that the team always comes before personal goals. “I knew it could be my first T20 hundred but the team goal is more important, hence I took that single rather than taking a huge risk,” he smiled. Comparing the wicket at the Eden Gardens to the one back home at the Feroze Shah Kotla, Dhawan said: “It’s totally opposite here compared to Delhi. I was telling Dinesh (Karthik) the same thing. It’s a good wicket to bat on. Good for the bowlers as well as the batsmen, makes it interesting. In Delhi we have to adapt ourselves, hence we got to have that skill.” While Dhawan generally looks to settle down into the innings, he started aggressively from the word go at the Eden Gardens and the opener said that he enjoyed batting on the wicket which suited stroke play. “I really enjoyed in the first six overs but I knew I had to stay till the last. I was getting the right thoughts and I had to take the game deep,” he said. While he shared a match-winning partnership with Rishabh Pant, the latter once again lost his wicket at the end as he looked to finish the game with sixes. But Dhawan backed the youngster. “Rishabh is such a big hitter he can always hit it out of the park,” he said.last_img read more

Foiling NPAs

first_imgWith the Look Out Circulars issued against debt-ridden Bhushan Power and Steel Limited (BPSL) chairman Sanjay Singhal and his wife and vice-chairman Aarti Singhal by CBI, the immigration authorities at all airports and entry-exit points across the country will notify CBI should Sanjay and his wife try to elude from the country. CBI had earlier this month registered a case of cheating amounting to Rs 2,348 crore against Singhal and the others including unknown public servants. Subsequently, CBI carried out searches at 18 locations across cities connected to the company. BPSL sits on the maturity point of the corporate insolvency resolution process (CIRP) initiated against it back on July 26, 2017, on a plea of PNB. The resolution plan submitted by JSW Steel is yet to be approved by the principal bench of National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) which reserved its order on Tuesday. Embroiled in heavy debts with a huge loan default of Rs 47,204 crore availed from 33 banks and financial institutions between 2007-14, BPSL was admitted in the New Delhi branch of NCLT for CIRP. Sanjay Singhal had made a last-minute offer to pay the financial creditors in full and take the company out of CIRP, under section 12 A of the IBC. The FIR filed by CBI also alleges that BPSL was one of the few companies to have paid kickbacks to those owned and controlled by Deepak and Rajiv Kochhar in a quid pro quo deal for getting loans sanctioned from ICICI bank headed by Deepak’s wife Chandana Kochhar at the time. The FIR reveals that ICICI bank had disbursed loans amounting to Rs 586.6 crore to BPSL between 2007-14. While ED remains in-charge of inquiring into the matter, this certainly reveals a nexus of cheating and criminal conspiracy which involves forging documents, falsification of accounts on a major scale by eminent industrialists and top-officials such as Singhal, Kochhar, and even the Sandesara brothers of Sterling Biotech currently on the run for being wanted in Rs 8,100 crore bank fraud. While investigating agencies gradually uncover the nexus, high-amount NPAs on top of money-laundering instances surface with absolutely devastating misuse of authority for personal gains. While the IBC Act, 2016, has been instated to combat insolvent companies and PMLA Act, 2002, to tackle money-laundering cases, the perpetrators have largely eluded from authorities – escaping the country – resulting in enactment of FEO Act, 2018. Cross-validation of loans and financial health of companies has to be regulated to prevent a drastic NPA and money-laundering scenario. The problem of NPAs has to be tackled from the root – loans granted despite sketchy remarks with falsified periodic validations. Having a cure for such adversities should not eclipse the need for preventive measures to avoid recurring instances of such adversities in the first place.last_img read more

Mobilisation of security personnel in 7-phase LS polls was bigger than Army’s ‘Op Brasstacks’

first_imgNew Delhi: As many as 20 lakh security personnel were deployed in the seven-phase Lok Sabha polls, rendering the exercise bigger than India’s well known ‘Operation Brasstacks’ in the 1980s, which was larger than any NATO exercise since World War-II, officials said Monday. The ‘Operation Brasstacks’ was a major military exercise of the Indian Army in Rajasthan. It took place in 1986 until its execution in 1987. The scale of the 2019 general election itself is massive and growing over time as between 1989 and 2019, the number of parties in the fray have increased over 20 times, the size of the electorate has increased by over 80 per cent, the number of polling stations has nearly doubled and the number of contesting candidates has increased by nearly 35 per cent. Also Read – Personal life needs to be respected: Cong on reports of Rahul’s visit abroad”Effectively, nearly 20 lakh personnel of the police and central paramilitary personnel were involved during the elections. The mobilisation of such a large scale is rare anywhere in the world. In fact, India’s best known Army exercise ‘Operation Brasstacks’ (1986-87), where nearly 6-8 lakh personnel were said to have been involved, itself was bigger than any NATO exercise since World War-II,” a Home Ministry official said. The extent of mobilisation of the security forces has also been massive with nearly 25 per cent of the overall strength of central paramilitary forces being deployed for elections this year, indicating involvement of over three lakh paramilitary personnel. Also Read – Firms staying closed 10 days a month due to recession, govt doing nothing: Priyanka GandhiHowever, since these officials are redeployed at various locations in different phases, the effective deployment is almost 2.35 times the number of troops actually involved. Thus, if the elections in 2019 were to be conducted on a single day, the effective requirement would be for over 10 lakh personnel. Similarly, in the 2014 general election, the actual and effective deployments were of the order of 2.5 lakh and 6 lakh, respectively. In addition to the paramilitary forces and state armed battalions, extensive participation of police personnel belonging to civil police and district armed reserve, along with home guards and special police officers in various capacities, have also been seen. Even if the participation is taken at 50 per cent of actual strength, this would mean the involvement of nearly 8-10 lakh additional personnel, the official said. Apart from the mammoth size of election-related mobilisation, the duration is also considerable. This year’s general elections were conducted over a period of nearly 40 days (April 11 to May 19) with counting of votes scheduled to take place on May 23. Timely mobilisation of nearly 20 lakh personnel within 40 to 45 days is a humongous task. A well thought planning with the Indian Railways, state and various forces play a crucial role in completing the requirement of the Election Commission, another official said. More than 150 special trains were utilised for mobilisation of troops. These troops criss-cross length and breadth of the country to meet the requirement of respective state, the official said. The core duties of the paramilitary personnel deployed for election duty include instilling a sense of confidence and security among people to exercise their franchise freely without any fear. The additional responsibilities include maintaining law and order, preventing poll violence and guarding the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). The Election Commission, in coordination with the Home Ministry, which has the administrative control over the central paramilitary forces, has made an assessment of all aspects having bearing on the election process, including the state-wise and phase-wise requirement of security forces, the official said. The ministry prepared a deployment plan of various forces like the CRPF, BSF, CISF, ITBP, SSB and the Assam Rifles keeping in view their role in border guarding, counter-insurgency operations and other commitments.last_img read more
